Cleaning and Sterilization Instructions for Steam and/or Flash Autoclave
Suggested cleaning procedure for the following Koven Technology surgical probe(s):

(Click on catalog number to view probe picture and Doppler compability information)

Cleaning: Probes must be cleaned to remove contaminating substances prior to sterilization. After each use, perform initial cleaning within the sterile field by wiping the probe free of blood and body fluids. Then, pass the probe out of the field. Disconnect the probe from the probe adaptor on the Doppler unit, clean the probe tip and housing thoroughly with a mild soapy solution. DO NOT SOAK. Complete preparation for sterilization in accordance to hospital procedure using an approved probe cleaning agent.

Sterilization: The ACP-8 probe may be steam autoclaved up to six (6) times at a temperature of 121°C (250°F) for 30 minutes OR flash autoclaved up to five (5) times at a temperature of 127° to 132°C (260° to 270°F) for 20 minutes. Cleaned probes should be wrapped prior to sterilization with cotton cloth.

Use a gravity displacement type steam sterilizer. A sterilizer with pre-vacuum will provide a shorter overall cycle time and accelerated drying by pulling a further vacuum at the end of the sterilization cycle.

Warning: Flash sterilization is not the recommended sterilization method. The ACP-8 probe should be steam autoclaved where time permitting. Flash sterilization may be used when there is an immediate need for a probe and there is no other alternative. Flash sterilization may be used only if ALL the following conditions are met.

  • There is an urgent need for the items
  • Work practices ensure proper cleaning and decontamination, inspection, and arrangement of instruments into appropriate sterilization trays or containers prior to sterilization.
  • The physical layout of the department or work area ensures direct delivery of sterilized items to the point of use.
  • Procedures are developed and followed for aseptic handling and personnel safety during transfer to the sterilized items from the sterilizer to the area of use.

Aeration: As required to return to room temperature or to start next cycle.

Coupling for Intraoperative and Laparoscopic use: During the examination, fluid coupling must be maintained for proper signal reception. If needed, irrigate the incision with sterile saline to insure adequate coupling which is essential for optimal Doppler performance. Use of sterile gel is acceptable for coupling use in all areas except the brain.

Contraindications: Hospital policy and procedure(s) takes precedence over this protocol.

Failure to use approved cleaning & sterilization procedures may void the warranty
